Marmoleum Design Challenge

Dezeen and Forbo Flooring have teamed up to launch a global design competition that challenges architects and designers to design a space-in-a-space that promotes well-being using Forbo Flooring Marmoleum flooring material.

An inspiring space that provides relaxation and enhances well-being in environments such as hospitals, schools and offices – anywhere in any space where you can play, learn, work, or heal.

Marmoleum Solid - 2024

The challenge

Entrants are tasked with designing a 10-square-metre space for installation in interior spaces such as hospitals, schools or offices (non-residential). Marmoleum must be installed as flooring and can optionally be applied on the walls up to a height of one metre. Entrants can also incorporate Forbo's Furniture Linoleum surfacing material and bulletin board on objects within the space.

The competition is open to anyone aged 18 or over, from any country in the world, who is professionally or educationally involved in architecture and design.

What is in it for you?

The cash prize is £5000 for the winner awarded through Dezeen – the winning design will be produced and exhibited in the Forbo Flooring showroom in The Netherlands.

The winner will also be invited to attend the launch event in The Netherlands, with the opportunity to meet members of the jury and key people within Forbo Flooring. There will also be significant exposure through the publication of the winning project on Dezeen and its social media channels, as well as via the various Forbo Flooring social channels worldwide.

How to participate

To enter the competition, entrants must register via the form below. You will receive an information package including two Marmoleum samples so you get acquainted with the material.

In the confirmation email there is a link to upload your design.

All designs must be handed in at the latest April 30th, 2024 before 00.00hrs CET.

Marmoleum Design Challenge – Brief and rules

When you register before March 21st you will get exclusive access to a special online product deepdive with Q&A to get direct information about Marmoleum, the collection and the challenge, it also offers you the possibility to ask questions to one of the jury members and get background information.

All entrants must read and agree to the terms and conditions of the competition before entry.

Marmoleum Design Challenge - Terms and conditions

You first register to participate. In the confirmation email there is a link where you upload your interpretation of the challenge, the deadline is April 30th, 2024. Entries must be submitted in English.

The following information is requested:

  • Name of the design

  • A description of the design idea, and an explanation of how it meets the brief (maximum 500 words)

  • A minimum of five and a maximum of 10 three-dimensional visualisations showcasing the idea

  • A mood board of materials used in the design

  • (Optional) Video or animation showcasing the idea (submitted via an URL)

  • Each image submitted should be a single image, free of any logos or text. They should be JPGs with a minimum resolution of 72 dpi and a maximum file size of 1MB each.
