SA Health tasked STH with designing a Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) ward at the Repat Health Precinct, dedicated to providing hospital-based specialist geriatric rehabilitation services. The ward will offer comprehensive and responsive assessment, care planning, and rehabilitation to manage medical conditions for older patients, while also supporting their families, caregivers, and community services involved in their care.

Recognised for its expertise in healthcare design, STH approached this project with a strong understanding of both design and operational sustainability, focusing on delivering a long-lasting and environmentally friendly flooring solution. They chose Forbo’s Modul’up Compact 2 mm floors for the hospital patient rooms, a product known for its many advantages.

When considering the lifetime of a building, often based on 50 years, traditional vinyl flooring is typically replaced every 15 years. Each replacement requires the removal of the old vinyl leaving adhesive and screed on the backing, which is then send to landfill, followed by re-screeding the subfloor before installing the new floor—an expensive and environmentally costly process.
The Modul’up compact 2mm version also complements the other flooring specified in the ward. BADGE and Next Gen Flooring, despite being new to this type of installation, demonstrated their commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve the desired outcome.

Modul’up offers several environmental benefits:
• No adhesive: Reducing chemical use on-site.
• Prepare the floor once for the building’s entire lifespan.
• Reusability: Flooring can be reused if in suitable condition.
• Recyclability: The material is recyclable at the end of its life due to the absence of contaminants like adhesive and screed.
