An Ríocht provides a two classroom Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) suite, with multi-sensory and para-educational spaces, designed around a central activities space for Scoil Chríost Rí, a Boys National School in Ireland.
The use of colour, materials and finishes were carefully considered following research into autism and colour, where it was found that tones of blue, green, orange and mauves are relaxing and calming.
“We chose to use Forbo Marmoleum flooring as it is a natural product, CO2 neutral and comes in a wide range of complementary colours for us to choose from. Colour and large pattern is expressed in the flooring, to induce feelings of warmth and comfort. The flooring patterns in the atrium and central activities space create a sense of playfulness and enclosure without boundaries, where informal learning and group work can take place. Forbo's use of mood boards and large samples provided the tools we needed to collaborate with the teachers and staff in choosing the colour scheme.”
