Floor Coverings Inspired by Nature
October 2022
It has long been understood that spending time in the great outdoors brings many benefits for our general health and well-being. Spending time in nature can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and boost feelings of happiness and well-being.
The concept of ‘bringing the outside in’, also referred to as ‘biophilic design’, remains a popular interior design trend, that aims to create an ambiance of serenity and of being close to nature.
According to a Tui Group press release with regards to the recent two Hapag-Lloyd’s new Hanseatic ships ‘Nature’ and ‘Inspiration’:
`The design concept, “inspired by nature”, reflects the expeditionary spirit and is the creative idea underpinning both ships. Nature is not only experienced outside, but also is reflected in the interior design. This comes to the fore in the choice of materials, colours and forms, as well as in the contours and lines of walls and surfaces, the lines of sight and therefore the interplay between the interiors and the world outside.`
Design concepts that connect us to nature are proven to inspire us, boost our productivity and even contribute to a stronger sense of well-being.
This can be achieved in both obvious and more subtle ways, for example by bringing physical characteristics of the natural world into the interior, such as water, greenery, natural light as well as the use of elements such as wood and stone. However, the quality of the air, the scent, the use of natural textures and the use of natural visuals can also have a positive impact.
Colour can have a strong impact on the atmosphere of the room, and the feeling that it invokes. For example, lighter colours can make spaces feel larger, brighter and airier, whilst darker colours can make rooms feel warmer and cosier.
Wooden floors, help to create the nature inspired interior styling. The mix of colours, patterns and textures within varying wood types can work perfectly with other furnishings in wood and other natural materials such as stone, marble, cork or bamboo.
In some circumstances on board cruise ships, natural wood floors may work perfectly, however in other areas the benefit of using textile-based natural wood floor covering designs, like those in the Flotex FR range, ensure that a room not only retains the desired character, but also greater comfort, acoustic performance, offers greater slip resistance and has the added benefit of being a lightweight product.
