No. 14 Henrietta Street is a Georgian townhouse in Dublin built c. 1748 and appropriated in 1877 to house multiple working class families. This project encompasses a ten year phased programme of works to rescue No 14 from imminent collapse, and to conserve and adapt the house to new cultural uses, culminating with the Tenement Museum, Dublin.
The project brief set the overarching aim of ‘building as primary artefact’ and sought to secure, hold and recover its fabric and finishes which transmit the house’s rich and complex social history.
Forbo was chosen as the flooring system experts and was asked to replace, or alternatively, to create an authentic replica of the original Linoleum flooring, strips of which still existed, and replicate as close to the style of the time as possible. A tall order, but through consultations with architects, social historians and former residents of Henritta Street itself, the task was completed to everyone’s satisfaction.
