As part of its work with Allergy UK, Forbo Flooring Systems has donated 50m2 of its Flotex flocked flooring to Meopham Community Academy in Kent, as part of a trial to investigate the impact of floor coverings on the health and well-being of pupils.

Meopham Community Academy currently has a pupil who is under the care of Great Ormond Street Hospital for allergic conditions, including severe eczema and a respiratory allergy. Therefore, Forbo’s Flotex will not only help him, but also other children with similar problems as they move through the academy.

Thanks to its unique construction, Forbo’s Flotex is a hybrid product that delivers all the warmth and comfort associated with a carpet whilst combining the practical elements of a resilient floor covering. Crucially, Flotex is the only textile floor covering to have been awarded the prestigious Seal of Approval from Allergy UK, as with regular vacuuming it will not harbour house dust mites or pet allergens. What’s more, it also benefits from Sanitized® an anti- microbial treatment that offers constant protection against bacteria.

Linda Dwight, Meopham Community Academy’s Business Manager, helped manage this project and commented: “The Flotex looks lovely and bright within the classroom and really provides us with confidence that we are helping children that suffer from allergies. We have also noticed that dirt and dust is easier to remove and does not build up like in the other classrooms – which is a bonus, as many of the activities in the classroom are carried out sitting on the floor.

“Although it is still early days, we are very hopeful that with the better weather we will see some very positive improvements in the childrens’ health. I wish we could have Flotex installed throughout the whole school!”
