The Hermannsburg Secondary School in the Huchting district of Bremen needed a new building because the main building was in need of renovation in order to integrate the specialist rooms, sports hall, administrative areas and the multifunctional refectory.
The starting point for the planning of the new building was Hermannsburg's guiding principle of "tolerance and helpfulness", i.e. the "place of togetherness" or, more freely interpreted, the "space within the object". The design of the new building follows the guiding principle of an open, inviting, energy-optimised and barrier-free building. With the integrated sports hall, the structure has an extremely compact design that is clearly divided into differentiated areas that can be used separately. The multifunctional zone on the ground floor forms the heart of the school building. The two-storey air space also extends this zone vertically - the gallery creates additional free space for the "open learning landscape". This promotes learning and teaching in differentiated group or project work.
The choice of building materials was based on sustainability criteria. Natural materials such as wood, bricks and mineral building materials are predominant. The sustainability aspects of the materials used had to be proven in advance by corresponding environmental product declarations (EPDs). For this reason, the architectural office tsj tönies + schroeter + jansen freie architekten decided to use Marmoleum Real and Fresco in shades of yellow and green. In addition to being climate-neutral, Marmoleum linoleum floor coverings offer numerous other advantages, such as lasting value and ease of maintenance, making them ideal for high-traffic applications in the education sector. Marmoleum was installed by Bloch Raum & Objekt - thus closing the circle to the starting point for the new building planning as a "place of togetherness".
