How to restore the traditional charm of Munich's Glockenspiel

The Glockenspiel on Munich’s Town Hall
Munich, Germany

The customer

The glockenspiel on Munich’s town hall is one of the most popular sights in the Bavarian capital and a must for any visitor. The glockenspiel is located in the middle tower of the new town hall on Marienplatz. Its 43 bells make it the biggest one in Europe. Some 32 figures emerge and depict scenes from the city’s history at several levels.

Application

The 43 bells, which weigh a total of 7 tonnes, have to be moved so that the glockenspiel with its 32 figures and clock mechanism can be operated just like it was 100 years ago. Recently, it had only been possible to play the glockenspiel via an MP3 file.

Our belting solution

The Siegling Extremultus LT 14P power transmission belt drives the glockenspiel. The leather-coated belt transmits the force from the glockenspiel’s mechanism to the bells.

Our leather-coated power transmission belts stand apart for:

  • Superior efficiency, precise synchronicity, and easy handling
  • Reliable speeds and long service lives
  • Short take-up ranges, little creep
  • Very good damping properties and durability
  • Easy implementation of mule and taper-cone drives where the belt is also twisted around its longitudinal axis.

Reichenbach GmbH, our longstanding partner in Eichenau, fitted this over 10-meter-long belt.
