HMS Collingwood

HMS Collingwood is a major naval base at Fareham, Hampshire, which specialises in training Officers and Ratings in maritime warfare. Approximately 13,00sqm of Forbo’s patented ColoRex Plus were installed in the new dining area of the building after previous flooring solutions were deemed unsuitable due to the poor condition of the building’s sub-floor.
Forbo Flooring Systems has saved HMS Collingwood Naval training camp both time and money by supplying its innovative ColoRex Plus flooring solution, eliminating the need for expensive sub floor preparation.

“The Colorex Plus tiles from Forbo Flooring Systems were particularly suitable for our canteen area as, thanks to the honeycomb structure of the backing, they can be loose laid on nearly any kind of sub floor, regardless of its condition,” comments Kevin Ayton, Site Services Performance Manager at Flagship Training, who were in charge of the flooring specification. “While other flooring products would be overstressed in such conditions, Colorex Plus provided a durable, high performance finish that eliminated the need for sub floor preparation, which would have been both expensive and time consuming.”

For ease of installation, the tiles comprise a dovetail connection system, providing a seamless finish under the surface. “Forbo’s Colorex system was a particularly easy floorcovering to install, as a simple ‘push and click’ motion provided a solid, durable surface,” comments John Papworth, project quantity surveyor for Mansell Construction.

In terms of colour and design, HMS Collingwood has utilised the warm cream tones within the Adula colourway for the majority of the flooring, with the blue accents of

Niagara indicating walkways, as well as designating the separate zones of the canteen.

“In addition to ensuring the selected floorcovering was suitable for our tricky sub floor situation, it also needed to be resilient enough to endure a high amount of wear and tear, given that it is located in a busy foot-traffic area. Colorex Plus is highly durable and can be easily machine cleaned for cost effective maintenance, ensuring the flooring stays looking good for years to come,” concludes Kevin.
