Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, one of the world's busiest multi-purpose venues, recently underwent a much-needed makeover after over 20 years of service.
Hosting up to 80 major events annually, the stadium sees a diverse range of activities, from AFL matches and The Matildas Olympic Qualifiers to performances by international artists like P!nk.
The stadium is over 20 years old, and it’s fair to say that these facilities were initially designed predominantly for male participants," says Amanda, Interior Design Leader at Grimshaw. "We reimagined these spaces to elevate them for sports and entertainment."
The recent use by the Matildas has perfectly demonstrated how the stadium can adapt to different needs, creating personality and identity in the team facilities. Check out the video here .
One of the standout features of the renovation is the flooring in the players' locker rooms. The flooring used is called Flotex, a high-performance product designed for heavy-use spaces like stadiums, school hallways, correctional centres, and aged care facilities. Flotex maintains its integrity even through impacts and puncturing from football studs and sports shoes with spikes, making it ideal for sports changing rooms.
