When Curlew Capital, a UK-based investment and development management company, were looking to refurbish one of its student accommodation sites into a more premium and boutique offering, they turned to Jasper Sanders + Partners. Looking to enhance the existing space and add a layer of sophistication to the building, whilst remaining conscious of sustainability, the architects turned to Forbo Flooring Systems.
Owned by This Is Fresh, Potterrow Student Living is a post-graduate accommodation with 151 studio apartments located 10 minutes away from Edinburgh Waverley and opposite the esteemed University of Edinburgh Campus. Previously consisting of cluster flats, Jasper Sanders + Partners were contracted to convert the building into a more mature and sophisticated space tailored to post-graduate students.
Rebecca Finney, Creative Director, from Jasper Sanders + Partners, commented: “As a company, we had helped with the original design of the existing student accommodation some years prior. However, our brief for these latest refurbishments was to transform it from cluster flats to studios, with premium finishes and subtle branding throughout to maximise the building’s potential.
“We worked closely with ADP Architecture to come up with the initial design, combining some of the existing colourful touches from our previous scheme with elements of the local environment. Given the close proximity to Edinburgh Castle, we chose to add ideas of drama and theatre, as well making the identity of the building more subliminal. We wanted a resident’s experience to be more reflective of the ethos of the space, rather than the design itself.”
