Sunderland Royal Hospital’s Emergency Department has undergone a large refurbishment with a three-storey extension and a new colourful paediatric department featuring Forbo Flooring System’s Marmoleum Marbled floor covering. Designed by P+HS Architects, the new development provides a vastly improved environment for patients and staff, and has been shortlisted for best refurbishment at the 2017 Healthcare Estates Awards. The scheme is also entered into this year’s Building Better Healthcare Awards.

The existing Emergency Department building previously housed both the adult and paediatric services, however to make the environment more welcoming for children, the refurbishment has seen the creation of two separate entrances. The children’s paediatric ward has been clearly defined by the use of six bright colours from the Marmoleum Marbled collection.

Adrian Evans, Associate at P+HS Architects designed the department. He commented: “The Trust specifically requested that we use Forbo’s Marmoleum in the design because it is longer lasting and has inherent anti-bacterial properties. We also specified a host of Forbo’s other flooring products throughout the entire ward, from the Coral Duo entrance matting to Colorex SD in X-ray and CT Scanner rooms. Colorex SD was chosen as it enables safe electrostatic discharge through the whole thickness of the tile making it the ideal choice when paired with hospital equipment.

Moreover, Forbo’s safety flooring Surestep Original was specified in bathrooms, toilets and utility rooms in neutral grey tones such as Smoke throughout the ward. Surestep adheres to HSE guidelines and EN13845, which guarantees the slip performance of the product over its lifetime.
Marmoleum Marbled was used in circles and swirls in various colours across the waiting area, set against a neutral sand-like colourway named Barbados. The patterns have been created using Golden Saffron, which has orange and yellow tones; alongside the starkly contrasting Scarlet red; the deep purple Summer Pudding; the fresh lime Spring Buds and finally the sea blue Laguna shades.
